Designing mobile applications for South African users means designing around the cost of data. A significant proportion of South African users buy data in bundles and monitor consumption closely, which changes the calculation on everything — application download size, image handling, background synchronisation, update frequency and analytics all consume something the user is paying for and aware of. An app that is generous with data will be uninstalled to free both storage and bundle, and the business will attribute the churn to something else.

Key Challenges

Device and network conditions reinforce this. The South African install base skews towards mid-range and entry-level Android hardware with constrained storage, so a large application competes for space against things the user values more. Connectivity is variable and power interruptions are ordinary, which means offline capability is a functional requirement rather than a refinement — an app that cannot complete a task without a connection will fail regularly in normal use. It is also worth asking honestly whether an app is the right channel at all for a South African audience, because messaging-based and web-based alternatives frequently reach more users at lower cost.
